3/12/10 - On Friday, March 12, 2010, this department received a call from a Billerica resident stating that she received a call from an unknown male that stated he had her son held hostage in a basement. The caller told the resident that she was to send a sum of cash and not to call police. The alleged hostage lives in Salem, MA and has been contacted by police. He was never in danger and police believe he had no knowledge of the threat. Shortly after this call, a similar incident occurred within the Town of Burlington to a resident of that town. It is believed that someone is either attempting a scam or a hoax. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious calls to police at 978-667-1212
3/10/10 - Please be aware that a “tree service” scam operation has been operating in Billerica. A group of men posing as tree cutters have been working their scam throughout Middlesex County/Southern NH. Typically they operate in a way that distracts the homeowner while a second suspect enters their house and burglarizes the home. If anyone comes to your home asking you to step outside to inspect some trees that they will be cutting down please call Billerica Police. While they often pose as tree cutters keep in mind that their scam could involve any story that may distract you.
