Crime prevention and personal safety tips to help keep you and your community safe from crime

6/23/10 - In these times of economic distress, many people are concerned about the threat of rising crime in their communities. Fortunately, there are ways to help protect your home and your neighborhood from crime. From simple steps like keeping your doors locked to starting a Neighborhood Watch program, there are plenty of things you can do to prevent crime.

Work with your neighbors to keep your neighborhood clean and orderly. Keep spare keys with a trusted neighbor or nearby shopkeeper, not under a doormat or planter, on a ledge, or in the mailbox. Set timers on lights when you're away from home or your business is closed, so they appear to be occupied. Illuminate or eliminate places an intruder might hide: the spaces between trees or shrubs, stairwells, alleys, hallways, and entry ways. With many law enforcement agencies cutting costs, it has never been more important for citizens to work together to prevent crime.

Information for Town of Billerica Residents regarding an investigation being conducted by The State Office of Emergency Medical Services in reference to EMT training records.

6/18/10 - There have been several recent news reports regarding the State investigation of EMT training records and the suspension of hundreds of EMT’s in this region of the state. The newspaper accounts refer to a Billerica resident and a Billerica Company being at the center of this controversy. The Company, Life Safety Maneuvers, is not affiliated with the Town of Billerica or The Billerica Ambulance Service.

At this point in time there are no employees of the Billerica Ambulance Service who are under suspension orders resulting from this investigation, or in any way implicated by the allegations. There is however one 911 Dispatcher who works in the Police Department that has currently had his EMT Certificate suspended as a result of this investigation. The Department is conducting an internal investigation regarding this Dispatcher. The Dispatch employee in question is not an Ambulance Service employee and does not provide medical care in the field for the Town of Billerica.

The Billerica Ambulance Service is a full Paramedic level service that provides Emergency Ambulance Services for the Town and its residents. This is a job that we take very seriously and strive to provide the best service for the Town as possible. I would like to assure Town residents that this issue is being closely monitored by the Department and Town Officials as details develop. If any resident has questions regarding this matter please feel free to contact my office or Town Manager, John Curran.

                                                                                                Chief, Daniel Rosa Jr.

Scams

6/17/10 - Please be aware of these scams that have affected Billerica residents.

Mystery Shopper

A legitimate company identified as Consumer Impressions, Inc. out of Texas has been targeted by scam artists using its name to defraud unsuspecting people of their money. The scam involves a resident receiving a package from Consumer Impressions Inc. that is unsolicited. The package contains instructions on how to participate as a “Mystery Shopper” on behalf of the company. Included in the package is a cashier’s check, usually from Citibank, for a large amount of money (example: $3,874.00) made out to the participant. The instructions ask for the participant to shop at a local superstore (ex: Walmart) and then send a smaller portion of the funds back to the company via Western Union. It takes approximately three days for the bank to notify the participant that the check was fraudulent.

Free Item Scam

According to other sources at the Billerica Council on Aging, an area senior was recently solicited by a person posing as a representative of MEDCO Pharmaceutical offering a “free item”. The representative began asking personal information that could have later been used for fraudulent purposes.

Ransom Threats and Law Enforcement Imposters

Over the past few months residents have been receiving calls from persons claiming to be holding their family members. Some of these calls have been from people claiming to be holding the family member as ransom, demanding the target send money immediately to a specific address or the held
party would be harmed. These calls have been targeting people all over the greater Boston area and it is believed to be an organized fraud being perpetrated nationwide. In most cases we are able to quickly confirm the personal allegedly being held ransom is not in jeopardy and is not themselves even aware of the fraud. Due to the serious nature of such claims we urge anyone receiving this type of call to immediately contact their local law enforcement representative of the FBI.
In other cases, area residents have been receiving calls from persons claiming to be either Law Enforcement representatives or attorneys that are calling on behalf of a family member being held in custody. The caller urges the target to send “attorney fees” or “bail money” via Western Union to secure the release of their family member. Most of these calls have originated from sources out of the Country and involve family members allegedly being detained outside of the Country. Again, we would urge anyone receiving this type of call to contact their local law enforcement authority or the FBI.

6/1/10 - Billerica residents should be aware that solicitors are in the Billerica area. There have been reports of solicitors asking to come into homes to check on cable equipment, please use caution and do not let solicitors into your home.
